چکیده

Introduction Animals must integrate large amounts of sensor information to orient movement towards goals and away from threats, often in milliseconds, to survive. Identical directives are faced by autonomous air vehicles; particularly rapid assimilation of surroundings and instantaneous obstacle avoidance. Nature, through evolution and natural selection, has optimized this behavior. In particular, insects initiate actions reflexively in situations where no time for detailed information processing or planned decision making is possible. Possession of similar capabilities would increase the performance, speed and accuracy of all unmanned aerial systems. The Systems Engineering Department at the Naval Postgraduate School, in conjunction with Case Western Reserve University (Case), propose developing a revolutionary set of biologically based artificial reflexes enabling instantaneous collision avoidance capabilities for unmanned air vehicles (UAVs) and comparing its performance to traditional optimal control methodologies.

An insect-inspired endgame targeting reflex for autonomous munitions

A target-seeking system for autonomous munitions in the endgame stage of flight is developed based upon a neural network model of the cockroach escape reflex. Despite significant differences in objectives, certain aspects of the cockroach escape response are consistent with desired characteristics of a target seeking system. An evolutionary targetseeking algorithm was generated to gather data t...

Insect Inspired Robots

Insect behaviour has been a rich source of inspiration for the field of robotics as the perception and navigation problems encountered by autonomous robots are faced also by insects. In this paper, we introduce a research platform, the Insectbot, that was built as a testbed for new biologically-inspired, vision-based algorithms and systems. The Insectbot is a groundbased robot but it is capable...

Microfluidic Devices for Insect Micro-Air-Vehicles

This work describes the intimate fusion of microsystems and physiology though the implantation of a microfluidic device into living insects. Specifically, we focus on the control of Manduca sexta moth flight activity using an implanted, low power electrokinetic drug delivery device. This effort is a critical component in our development of “Insect Micro-Air-Vehicles” which aim to fuse nanodevic...

Vision-based Detection of Autonomous Vehicles for Pursuit-evasion Games

We present a vision-based algorithm for the detection of multiple autonomous vehicles for a pursuit-evasion game scenario. Our algorithm computes estimates of the pose of multiple moving evaders from visual information collected by multiple moving pursuers, without previous knowledge of the segmentation of the image measurements or the number of moving evaders. We evaluate our algorithm in purs...

Tracking of Fluid-Advected Odor Plumes: Strategies Inspired by Insect Orientation to Pheromone

Autonomous vehicles with plume tracing capabilities would be valuable for finding chemical sources in fluid flows. This article considers strategies allowing autonomous vehicles to find and trace an odor plume to its source. These strategies are inspired by the maneuvers of moths flying upwind along a pheromone plume. Although moth maneuvers are well documented, the mechanisms underlying sensor...
